Friends have rallied in support
of the furniture maker Jon
Brooks, whose studio in New
Hampshire burned down in
January. The unique structure
was lost along with finished
pieces and machinery, though
his house nearby was spared
and nobody was harmed (visit

The Tar Heel State is the place
to see world-class art this year
as two major venues debut. The
expanded North Carolina Mu-
seum of Art unveils in April,
featuring a 127,000-square-foot
addition designed by Thomas
Phifer and Partners (ncartmu
seum.org). In October, the
Mint Museum unveils its new
satellite, the Mint Museum Up-
town, to encompass the Mint
Museum of Craft + Design. The
inaugural show features con-
temporary British studio ceram-
ics from the collection of Diane
and Marc Grainer (mintmu

Center kicked off its soth-anni-
versary in January with “A Seed
Planted: A Tribute to Robert
